The Bodegas Carlos San Pedro Perez de Viñaspre is a small family winery with a long history of winemaking in Rioja Alavesa. Today, the traditional cellar is more than 300 years old with ideal conditions for wine ageing and is combined with a modern facility established in 2004 to ensure the fusion of tradition and modern technology. Our range of products include traditional carbonic maceration wines, crianza & reserva wines, as well as some rarities in the market such as un-barreled red wine aged only in the bottle.

In 1985, the brothers Vicente, José Mari and José Errasti decided to establish a winery at Baños de Ebro with its own, unique identity. The owners have a 50 year track record in grape growing and winemaking. In addition to BODEGAS GAILUR, the brothers also own TXAKOLI ZUDUGARAI, a winery producing under the Getariako Txakolina D.O. designation of origin. In the year 2000, in view of the widespread acceptance of their wines, the brothers decided to extend their facilities and incorporate the latest techniques as a way of guaranteeing quality whilst obtaining a traditional product. In this way, the wine ageing capacity was increased to the present 2000 m2 cellars. Recognition of the quality of our wines, endorsed by our customers in the catering and food supply sectors, is encouraging us to continue along these lines, an approach which will unquestionably help us to achieve the right market position for our wines.

The Bodega has approximately 25 hectares of vineyards between Laguardia and Lapuebla de Labarca, and the average age of the vines is 45 years old. 85% of the vines are of the indigenous Tempranillo variety, 8% are Viura, and the rest are comprised of Graciano and Garnacha. The altitude, sunshine hours, temperature, the moderate rainfall and the depth of the soils, along with the age of the vines, are all important factors in determining the quality of the wine produced. The Bodega’s main objective is quality, and has seen its efforts deservedly recognised in recent years by a number of prestigious awards in international wine competitions. The winery has 150 French oak and 290 American oak casks for its ageing.

Bodegas Luis Cañas is a family-owned winery that dates back to 1928, although the family has been in the grape-growing and wine-making business for more than two centuries. Today it is one of the leading wineries in Rioja Alavesa with 90 hectares of vineyards all located at an altitude of at least 400 metres above sea level. Bodegas Medrano Irazu is a family run cellar located in Elvillar, Rioja Alavesa. We are the third generation of winemakers and own 98 hectares of vineyards near our winery, cultivated according to maximum allowed yields by the DOCa Rioja Control Board. Our philosophy is to take optimum care of our vineyards to give us the highest quality Tempranillo, Garnacha and Viura grapes to produce wines that express the best properties of our ‘terroir’. The quality of our wines has been recognised with excellent reviews in several prestigious wine guides and magazines as well as by consumers.

The Valdelana Family has been farming its vineyards in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa) since the 17th century. The bodega is built over six underground cut stone cellars dating back to the 16th century, where we find the casks, a chapel dating back to 1583 and an underground vineyard. Our wines, however, are international, modern and full coloured, with spectacular aromas from new oak barrels. The perfectly balanced wines show that history and modernity are not incompatible.

Bodegas Labastida combines traditional winemaking techniques with the latest technology to produce excellent wines. Located in the little village of Oyón, we are a family cellar where artisan quality wines are elaborated based on our own vineyards and state of-the-art facilities combining tradition and technology. Our vineyards grow over 52 hectares of calcareous-clay soil where we cultivate Tempranillo and Graciano, with vines of an average of 30 years. We only produce red wines – which come with the Cellar’s name. Our range includes a young wine (not aged), a Selected Harvest (aged 5 months in American oak barrels), a Crianza (aged 12 months), a Reserva (aged 18 months) and a special wine: Finca Costanillas (the grapes come from the same small vineyard). Our total production is limited up to 300.000 bottles per year but this allows us the possibility to offer an optimum quality to our customers. The quality of our wine goes with its presentation: attractive and elegant.

Herederos de Marqués de Riscal has always been a leading and pioneering company in the wine producing sector. As far back as 1858, it became the first winery in the Rioja to produce wines following the Bordeaux method and in 1972; it was the first winery to promote the Rueda Designation of Origin, where it produced its famous Marqués de Riscal white wines. Marqués de Riscal sells its products in more than 80 countries and its wines enjoy the highest international distinctions as well as numerous awards and mentions in the media. In the 21st century, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal is still writing its history with the “Ciudad del Vino”, a project that is a milestone in the way to understand the world of wine.

We produce Txakoli elaborated with local grape varieties, mostly Hondarrabi Zuri, in our 7 hectare estate vineyard located in the Basque village of Okendo. Defined by the Okendo hills and a proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, our winery enjoys a micro climate which gives it a unique personality. We blend 55% Hondarrabi Zuri with 30% Petit Corbu and 15% Gros Manseng.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WINE CELLAR
Txakoli is a special type of wine typical of the Basque Country. It is a young, fruity white wine made with indigenous grape variety Hondarrabi Zuri. Txakoli Oxinbaltza is located in the territory of Bizkaia, just 30kms from Bilbao. In the heart of the valley in beautiful surroundings, we have 23 hectares of sloped vineyards. Our wine cellar lies in the middle of the vineyard – an old stone-built house with facilities to produce up to 250,000 litres of wine. The winery adopts leading technologies for the production and bottling of its wine. We make two types of wine: Txakoli Oxinbaltza (5,000 litres) and Txakoli Katan (59,000 litres).

Talai-Berri winery is located in Zarautz, a municipality within the Denomination of Origin “Getariako Txakoliña”. Built in 1992, this cellar is situated on the sunniest hills of the Talaimendi mountain, surrounded by 12 hectares of vineyards, 10 of them in full production and the remaining ones on their 1st and 2nd growing year.

DESCRIPTION OF THE WINE CELLAR
The tiny Chacolí de Guetaria/Getariako Txakolina DO is centred around the small medieval fishing town of Guetaria and now consists of some 350 hectares, but, given demand, cult status and the Spanish bandwagon, there are now 2 rival DOs: Chacolí de Álava and Chacolí de Vizcaya.
Historic Txomin Etxaniz represents the pinnacle of quality in the heartland, where the Chueca family have been making wine for generations (the official archives date back to 1649) and now have some 40 owned hectares together with a further 15 that are contracted.
The main reason that Ernesto’s wine is so drinkable is the small percentage of (black) free run, low alcohol Hondarribi Beltza that it contains, which rounds the high acidity of the (white) Hondarribi Zuri out and makes it so pleasurably balanced.
The volume of production is now 500,000 kilos in a good year on the basis of some 13,000 kilos a hectare; and the wine – a crisp, buzzy, citrusy, spritzy offering of pleasing intensity that continues to delight and find new, surprised fans – is steel fermented for some 3 weeks at 15°, with the centenary vines providing the root-stock for new plantings.
Chosen this year for the annual Gran Caballero dinner, Ernesto shrugs his shoulders and just gets on with things in his usual no nonsense Basque way. He is pleased that the anchovies the town is renowned for are at last regenerating in suficient quantities to allow fishing, and his stalwart clients are giving him no grief. He is looking forward to cracking on with the next vintage.

The medieval town of Laguardia by the foot of the Sierra Cantabria mountain range is an outstanding site chosen by farmers ever since the Neolithic times due to its exceptional climatic and geological characteristics. Here, amongst archaeological remains, ancient hermitages and churches, lies Viñedos de Páganos, where the soil lends the vineyard and therefore the wine a unique mineral character with extraordinary personality. El Puntido, which originates from the vineyards surrounding the winery, express the single characteristics of this enclave, of the soil and of the perfect adaptation of the Tempranillo variety. Once elaborated, the wine lies in optimal conditions in underground caves, similar to those built during the XVIth century.
